Juggun Kazim

Juggun Kazim also known as Jay Kazim, is a very talented and ambitious young woman. She has worked in numerous Pakistani telefilms and even embarked on the Canadian film scene. Not only is she an admirable actress, she is also a model and TV host for various shows airing on Pakistani channels. Read on to learn how she got into acting and what her future goals area
How would you introduce yourself to our readers?
I would like to think that Im a rather multifaceted personality. From modeling to hosting to acting and lately the random bit of journalism; I seem to want to do it all. I just love the arts, and more specifically the media. Im one of those people that wake up in the middle of the night because of having a dream that could be converted into a scene. For me, this line of work is more than a passion, its an obsession.

Tell us about where you grew up, your family and education?
I grew up in Cantonment, Lahore with an elder sister and a younger brother. My mother is still alive, but my father passed away 5 years ago. His murder was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life. My own tiny family unit is comprised of my two year old son, Hamza Ahmed and myself. I am a single mother and adore my son to distraction; he is my motivation to do everything and truly makes me want to be a better person.

I went to Lahore Grammar School, and then to Kinnaird College for my FA. After completing that, I went to Canada to attend the University of Western Ontario where I did my BA Honors in Media Information Technology and Sociology with a minor in Psychology. One summer while in college, I also did my CCNA 2.0 just for fun. I guess I was bored and computers are not exactly rocket science, so I decided to have fun and educate myself at the same time. After college, I took a variety of courses in acting and commercial modeling. I am also now planning to do my LLB privately. I have to admit, I miss college and I love to constantly educate myself; it makes me feel like I’m still a kid.
You are an actress, a TV host and a model; how did you get involved with working in the media?
When I was four, someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. My reply was a mein bara ho kay actor banu ga.At that age, I obviously had not quite realized that I was a girl, which of course came along as a rude awakening at the age of thirteen.
My first commercial play was when I was fourteen years old and the director was my best friend Mashal Peerzada. I must say, it was one of the most fun theatre projects I have worked on till date. However, I started my professional acting and modeling career under the name Jay Kazim in Toronto. I was approached by Sutherland Models in Canada to work as a petitea and commercial model; because obviously I am way too short for the ramp. I did two music videos with them and then was approached my current Canadian Agents, The Newton Landry Management. Sandie Newton and Yanick Landry took me under their wing and started sending me to auditions. I ended up doing a Diet Coke Ad which ran for 2 seasons because it was so popular. I also then did a few more commercials and theatre work, and in the process also auditioned for the movie Pink Ludoos. Never in my wildest imagination did I think I would be chosen as the lead in this movie; but Allah Mian was very kind to me and after only the 2nd stage of auditions, I was offered the part. (You can google me under Jay Kazim and the rest of my stage and acting work in Canada will come up.)
Did your family support your decision to enter this industry? What obstacles have you faced by entering this profession?
My family didn’t really approve of this line of work initially, but now I think they have come to accept it and are secretly a little proud of me. I had no major obstacles because I have always been very independent in my behavior and thought process. Also, once I had finished my degree from college, my mother was pretty much okay with whatever profession I chose to pursue.
Out of modeling, acting and hosting, what do you enjoy most?
I have never really considered myself to be a model. I am essentially an actress and enjoy hosting. Hosting is something I just fell into while I was pregnant, and now I have to say I love acting and hosting just as much. Though, I do have the soul of an actor. I host predominantly to change people’s narrow-minded perception of the media industry and to promote positive social change.
What type of modeling have you done? Have you participated in fashion shows? If so, when and where?
I am mainly a print model, if you can call me a model that is. Modeling is something I do just for fun; I have never participated in fashion shows despite being trained by Sutherland Models to walk the ramp. I just think that at 5 feet 4 inches, I look rather stupid walking the ramp. One should learn to work within the limitations of one’s body rather than make of fool of themselves.
Tell us about the shows you host on TV.
A.My career in hosting started with the program Beanbag, which I wrote and conceptualized for Business Plus. After that, I hosted: CEO for Business Plus, Aaj Entertainment Tonight for Aaj TV, Fashion Stop for Ary Digital, Sunday Brunch for Aaj TV
My current programs on air are: Morning with Hum Weekend Edition for Hum TV, Aik Din Juggun Kay Saath for Vibe TV (Celebrity and Media Personalities kay interview.), Honestly Speaking with Juggun Kazim on PTV (Program deals with social issues within Pakistan)
You have acted as well; what shows you have acted in and what is your most memorable role in acting?
As of late, I have acted in various projects in Pakistan. The ones I was most noted in 2007 were: Manosalva in the character of Sheena for Hum TV, Sitam in the character of Kiran for PTV and Piyasi in the character of Dolly for Hum TV. I have also acted in a variety of series and telefilms. Just recently my new serial aired on ARY Digital by the name of Sher Dil, on which I play the character of Neelum. I am now working on 3 serials, Momal Productions Saiqa,Shahid Zahoor’s ‘Chaat, Talking Filmein’s serial and a television soap that has yet to be titled. The most favorite character I have played was Maya in ‘Aik Pal, a telefilm which I producted and which was directed by Mashal Peerzada. The film has been selected by Hum TV for their telefilm competition.
They say there is a lot of competition in modeling, what has your experience been? Would you recommend this profession to the youngsters who want to enter this field?
Thank god I’m not a professional model! I just model for fun. If you are tall and skinny, its easy to become a model in Pakistan. However, its a lot tougher to be as good of an actor as Nadia Jamil or Faisal Qureshi. Twenty years ago I wouldn ot recommend this profession to anyone, but now things have changed for the better and that's allowed a lot of people to enter this industry on a more positive note.
You recently appeared in the latest Jal video, tell us where that video was shot and how was the experience?
The video was shot in Lahore at Bari Studios. It was amazing to work with a team of such talented professionals like DOP Neil Lisk and director Bilal Lashari. Within the limited amount of technical facilities, they did a fabulous job. The hair and makeup was done by Maram and Abaru, and the wardrobe was provided by Rabya Butt and Munib Nawaz. Basically, there was no way that things could have gone wrong. It's the team that makes the production, not just the talent!
To a lot of people, being a model means having a glamorous lifestyle, hundreds of fans and traveling; how true is this and what are the drawbacks?
People say that success goes to your head, but I would n't know since I am not even one hundredth as successful as I aim to be eventually. Of course the fans, traveling and glamour are all part of the package that comes with acting, hosting and modeling. But it’s not quite as glamorous at it may seem. It’s a lot of hard work and effort at the end of the day. The drawbacks included constant exhaustion, constant criticism and the fans that sometimes decide to start stalking and harassing you. All in all, I love it because I don't get caught up in the issues.
What are your goals for the future? Where do you see yourself professionally in the next 10 years?
I will hopefully have my book published and be working on the next few. In terms of acting, I hope to be recognized as the Shabana Azmi or Meryl Streep of Pakistan. As far as hosting is concerned, Oprah is my idol! And of course, I do plan to start producing feature films. Those are the goal I hope I can supersede them.
Lastly, what is your message to the readers of The Saturday Post?
Learn to love yourself. When you can honestly love yourself, only then can you love others unconditionally. Learn to respect yourself and the opinions of others. Be a good person; a clean and pure soul goes a long way. And ALWAYS follow your dreams. One always gets those things that they want the most in life but you have to really have to want it.

Anjuman
Anjuman is a Pakistani film actress. She was one of the most successful Punjabi film heroines of Pakistan during the 1980s and early 90s. Her real name is Anjuman Shaheen and she was born in Bahawalpur.[1] Anjuman's parents came from Ahmed Pur East and settled in Multan and then migrated to Lahore.

Career
Her career spanned almost 20 years and she appeared in more than 160 films. She first appeared in the Urdu film,Soorath co staring with Waseem, Afshan, Taj Niazi, in 1973 and she gave her last appearance in 2000 in the film Peengan. Soorath was not a success; her first major hit was Waadey ki Zanjeer (1979) She had major roles in Sher Khan and Chan Varyam and played a supporting role in Sala Sahib. All three films were diamond jubilee hits and were released on the same day, a unique record, which she shared with her partner hero Sultan Rahi, her playback voice (singer) Melody Queen Madam Noor Jehan, and musician Wajahat Attre.[3] Anjuman was a darling of the working classes, who went to the cinema frequently. She could dance according to their taste and she had the figure of a traditional Punjabi Mutyaar, which suited viewers at the time.
She appeared with every hero of her era but with Sultan Rahi she ruled the Punjabi cinema for more than a decade. She also appeared with Ali Ijaz, Javed Sheikh, Ghulam Mohiuddin, Izahr Qazi and Nadeem. Her initial films were in Urdu but the bulk of her career was based on acting in Punjabi films. Her roles ranged from a traditional innocent village girl to modern sexy bombshell, romance to action packed.
Marriage
Anjuman married an income tax officer, Mubeen Malik, has two sons and one daughter, quit films, and moved to the United Kingdom. According to gossip, Malik soon grew fed up with her lifestyle; he was shocked at his wife's "fast" life, and slowly but surely bickering and fighting became the tone of their marriage. During this time, Sultan Rahi was murdered on the National Highway. Lollywood was deprived of its most famous star, and the Punjabi film industry virtually ground to a halt.
Relations between Anjuman and Malik remained always tense though they managed to tolerate each other but after a long tense marriage, Anjuman divorced in 2009 and returned to Lahore, Pakistan.
Comeback in films
Anjuman returned to acting in 1999 in the title role in the film Chaudrani The adoring masses welcomed their beloved Queen home and lifted Chaudrani to considerable success upon its release but but soon the golden touch began to fade. Anjuman, however, perceived Chaudrani's success as vindication of everything she had planned. She refused any further character roles, opting only for solo heroine projects and required a lofty salary of Rs. 300,000. She felt that she was in a position to be calling all the shots, but in any film industry you are as only as good as your last hit and she was soon to taste the vagaries of stardom. Her next release was Jag Mahi, opposite similarly dinosauric Ghulam Mohiuddin, in 2000. It had a tepid response and barely lasted a few weeks playing to largely empty halls. Anjuman's next release was a litmus test of sorts and this she failed disastrously. The film Peengan opposite Saud was met with derision.
Audiences started shouting slogans of Maa Puttar (Mother and Son) and Buddhee Ghori Laal Lagaam during the film. Yet, she refused to change her stance on character roles, as well as the size of her pay check. Suddenly, the industry began to mutter about Anjuman being a kiss of death if she was in the romantic lead.
There was much depression in her household as news spread through the industry that distributors had announced they would not be handling any film starring Anjuman for fear of financial loss. The producers with whom she had already signed suffered enormous losses. A few films which had been partly completed were recalled by the producers and shorn of any Anjuman involvement.
She was abruptly dropped from the film Badmaash, for which she had already canned two songs and numerous scenes, and replaced by upcoming starlet Noor. The producer felt they would be better off cutting Anjuman, and their costs, rather than going ahead with Anjuman as the leading lady.
Further news arrived that Anjuman's scenes in the film Badmaash tey Qanoon had also been dropped and edited out of the film, and that she had been replaced by Nargis. This was the final straw for Anjuman, the humiliation proving too much to take. She announced her immediate retirement, that she was just hanging around to complete her on hand assignments, and that she would shortly be leaving Pakistan altogether for a life of anonymity in the UK where her former husband Mubeen Malik owned a flat. Her final two movies were Jatti Da Vair in 2000 and Ek Dhee Punjab Di (Daughter of Punjab), which is a title befitting a final Anjuman effort.
Physical appearance
Anjuman was about 175 cm (5 feet and 9 inches), taller than any other Lollywood heroine of that era. Due to her height and figure she remained a darling of Punjabi cinema viewers but she gained weight in the early 90s, which damaged her career.
End of career
Her departure may have been a crushing blow to many of her die hard fans, who admired the thumkas (pelvic thrusting dance manoeuvres) of Anjuman. In the mid 1980's, Sultan Rahi, Mustafa Qureshi and Anjuman dominated the industry to such an extent that a film was not considered a viable project unless they were present. Film after film after film saw the three stars appear, with different names, but merely repeating their roles from the previous efforts. Nonetheless, the public lapped it up and all three became icons of an era.
Anjuman in action films
Action was the essential element of the Punjabi films; Sultan Rahi gained a reputation as an action hero but in many films Anjuman herself played a female action hero. The audience saw her fighting with bad guys and displaying her powers along with her dances simultaneously in those movies. Some of her action films include Hunter Wali, Dulari, Qatil Haseena, Daku Haseena, Kali Charn, Sultana, Nangi Talwar, and more.
She was seen in action films, riding horses, driving motor bikes and doing stunts thus giving a new dimension to female roles in Lollywood movies, which were previously based on a shy and innocent girl. Plots of Anjuman's action films were based upon revenge, although she played a don in Insaniyat ke Dushman. Anjuman can be considered as a first established female action hero of the Pakistan film industry. Her viewers not only liked her acting and dances but also her action skills.
Planned comeback
It is rumored that she is making another comeback in her upcoming movie 'Numbardarni' which is being produced by Actress Nargis. The film should be out in 2009/10. Which could worry Saima and Reema.
Criticism
Anjuman is often criticized for being too big and too overweight, particularly in the late '80s and early '90s when she gained a lot of weight. She did not belong fit the slim barbie doll model of heroine, which drew criticism.

Asad Amanat Ali Khan

Asad Amanat Ali Khan (September 25, 1955 – April 8, 2007) was a popular classical, semi-classical and ghazal singer from Pakistan. Hailing from famous Patiala Gharana, Asad was son of famous musician Ustad Amanat Ali Khan. Asad Amanat Ali Khan died relatively young of heart attack on April 8, 2007 in London.

Early life and background
Asad Amanat Ali Khan was born in Lahore, Pakistan. His great-grandfather, Ali Baksh Khan, was the founder of the Patiala Gharana. His grandfather, Akhtar Hussain, was a prominent musician of his time who added to his repute by coaching two of his sons into becoming a formidable singing duo(Amanat Ali Khan and Fateh Ali Khan). Amanat Ali Khan, Asad's father, died in 1974. Asad's younger brother Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan is a popular pop singer and he was the lead singer of band Fuzon.
Singing career
When he was 10 years old Asad recorded his first song, which featured on his grandfather’s debut album. He had also been interested in academics and often said if not a singer, he would love to be a pilot. He joined a private institution however and began singing professionally after completing his F.A. He started his musical career performing "Thumri" and then went on to record some of his most popular Punjabi numbers and Ghazals, such as "Umra Lagian", "Zara Zara", "Kal Chaudwin Ki Raat", and "Ghar Wapas Jab". One of the songs that featured in almost every concert he performed, arguably his biggest hit, was "Insha Ji Utho" (Originally sung by his father).
Asad worked for Pakistan Television for several years. Nisar Bazmi, composer and PTV producer, who died one week before him, gave him his first break, introducing the artist to the world on live television. He retained his affiliation with television through the years, recording over 1,000 songs. Asad also contributed to the Pakistani film industry, featuring on a number of soundtracks. Moreover, he caught the attention of neighboring Bollywood and contributed to soundtracks there too.
Asad also sang as a member of singing duo with his uncle Hamid Ali Khan. Asad owed much of his early recognition to his late father's famous numbers. Quite often his concert would round off with "Insha'a Jee utho, abb cooch karo" (Get up O Insha! It's time to leave the world) — [Insha Allah Khan born 15 June 1927 d. 11 January 1978) who wrote it, a song that finds another ironic reference in Asad's death. , Amanat Ali and Asad Amanat who sang it — both died relatively young. Other than music and the family name, Asad inherited from his father a passion to act in films. But the affair was cut short after an unsuccessful attempt.
Asad Amanat Ali was also famed for his "soz-o-salam" recitations in Urdu describing the events of Karbala during Ashura in Muharram, and appeared on many radio and television specials about Karbala over the years before his death.

Awards
Like his father, Asad was given the president’s award for Pride of Performance. The government of Pakistan acknowledged Asad Amanat Ali Khan’s immense contribution to Pakistani music by awarding him the Pride of Performance on March 23, 2007 (2 weeks before his death).
Death
He had visited London in January and was receiving treatment for a condition known as Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. He returned to Pakistan however during his treatment to receive the President's award of Pride of Performance. After receiving the award he had left Pakistan on April 3, 2007 for medical consultation, and while in England, on April 8, 2007 died in Cassiobury Park in London whilst enjoying an outing with the family. He had fallen to the ground and many attempts were made to revive him however, he had died instantaneously. His medical tests were scheduled for the following week but he never got a chance to continue his treatment. His body was brought back to his home country Pakistan for the burial. He was buried in Mominpura Graveyard Lahore.
